Sunshine and Saturdays

Ahhhh...nothing like a sunny saturday in Abu Dhabi- especially when the temps are cooling down- about 95 degrees and the water is cooling off...probably like 85..
The Park Family invited us out on their boat.  Oh so nice of them!

This pic is a bit out of order...but at the end of the day the surf was good!  I am trying out their new surf board.

This is Tory and Gage showing us how to do it!

In reverse order...but yes, we did a lot of biffin' it!

Haley rippin' it up!

Audrey doing it her way!

Cute pic of Colby!

Sul and Quin riding tandem.

Me finally letting go....Very cool, this surfing thing! Very first time!

Nothing compares to these azure waters.  Beautiful secluded beach.  Too bad it is going to be transformed into high roller beach resorts.

All I can say is a lot of smiles this day!  An awesome day in The UAE!

Hunting and Shooting Exhibition

A few weeks back we visited the Hunting and Shooting Expo at ADNEC.
Everything from books, ammunition, guns, pocketknives, falcons for sale, fancy dune buggies, antique motorcycles, camels, and more was on display.
The kids enjoyed the interactive display of desert wildlife.
It's not everyday you get to hold a trained desert falcon!

Today's thoughts...

This summer passed so fast - so fun and crazy!  I find myself reflecting a lot on the last two months...but that is for another blog post, one where I really have time to sit and pour out my emotions.  I don't know if I am ready for that yet.

Abu Dhabi - round three.  Here we are.  A very nice homecoming, coming back halfway around the world and settling into our old routine in our same villa from last year.  That made the transition back to the Middle East at whole lot easier.

We had a quick adjustment time - two days.  One day to sleep and one day to get new uniforms, lunch box essentails, and hopefully a shower squeezed into that time frame.  It took the kids and I about a week to get back on sleeping schedule.

The school year started great; we got teachers that we "unofficially requested".   Both Sullivan and Hazel have grade team leaders as their teachers.  Grace is enjoying her iPad class.  She insisted that during our settling-in meeting I tell Mr. Grant, her teacher, that he was the best teacher at the school.  Audrey is enjoying middle school, loving being in her good friend Holly's class, and rotating teachers throughout the day.

Hazel started pre-K this year.  I was torn between keeping her home and sending her.  Last year it was just her and I.  We did a lot of baking, play-doh making, swimming, beach days, painting, etc.  We also did a lot of running around - errands, crying, heat exhaustion-filled activities, more crying...stuff she didn't necessarily like to do. Stuff I am not sure I liked doing either - who likes to shop at three different grocery stores in one day? Hazel is doing great in school.  Swimming lessons, library, PE, Playground, stories, puzzles, drawing, music...  She just goes mornings, but I miss her.  With her being gone I am not going to the beach and painting and reading funny picture books... I am trying to exercise, baking big people food, cleaning out closets, etc.  I must admit I enjoy doing a few things by myself but I miss those days that were not too long ago...

I look at Audrey who is closing in on twelve years.  She could be away at college in 6 years time.  Have I taught her well?  Have I been a good parent?  A good listener?  Sometimes I feel like I am always telling her what to do, what to wear, hurry up and get ready... but have I listened enough?  Have I been a good sounding board so she knows what she WANTS to wear, to be, to become...  I hope.

Sullivan just turned seven yesterday. It's hard for me to believe.   How could these years roll by so swiftly?  He wanted to go to school so badly mostly because he wanted me to bring in a treat to share with his classmates.  We settled on ice-cream bars, an authentic American treat to share.  He was so happy and proud to stand at the door and hand them out to his classmates.  That smile that beamed from his sweaty face was priceless.  Funny how I was so worried about finding the 'right' gift for him and all he cared about was sharing a yummy treat with his classroom pals.  That kids never ceases to amaze me.

Grace has decided to swap in her dream of becoming a world wrestling champ for becoming an Olympic Gymnast.  Our good friend Halie started coaching gymnastics at a local club and convinced us of its authenticity.  We decided to try it out.  Grace is now going twice a week and begging to camp there nightly.  She is on a protein-eating kick and is found doing splits and back handsprings wherever I find her in the villa.  I have no doubt Grace will succeed in whatever she puts her mind to.  I hope I have the energy to support her every endeavor.

Life is good - really when I reflect on all my numerous blessings I am overcome with emotion.  I have four amazing, beautiful, unique kids.  They are all healthy, literate, artistic, creative, religious, moral beings.  They keep me grounded, keep me laughing, crying, and praying... I love them.

Bruschetta

This is my new daily craving.
Just a simple Bruschetta- Roma Style.

Italian bread
Garlic clove
olive oil
fresh mozzarella cheese
fresh basil
fresh roma tomatoe

Slice crusty Italian bread about 1 inch thick.
Cut one garlic clove in half.
Brush cut side of garlic on the sliced bread.
Toast just a few minutes until warm.
Slice mozzarella, basil and tomatoes.
When the bead is toasted top with one layer of tomatoe,
  mozzarella, and chopped basil.
Drizzle with olive oil.

***I cheat a bit and sometimes rub the bread with butter and sprinkle garlic salt before toasting.
I also like it with fresh pepper on top.

Yummy!  Diverti!

Rome

Rome - Day 1

What can I say?  It was Rome!
It was amazing, delicious, fragrant, sunny, rainy, cozy, exhausting, exhilarating and more.
One of my top 5? 10?  Well one of my top vacation get-a-ways with Q.
We began the trip with a late departure out of Abu Dhabi - 11:30 pm.  Was nice, gave us time to get the kids ready for bed and dropped off to our good friend's house for a few days.  The kids were excited for a few days of sleepovers with their buddies, they were pretty happy when we left.

Traveling with Q is a very different experience than the "family caravan" travel I am accustomed to.  There are no diaper bags, no being saddled up with 5 bulging backpacks (one being my own), and loaded down with snacks,  game boys, crayons, coloring books and all sorts of entertainment for the long road ahead.  This trip was quite the opposite.  We packed really light - taking only a backpack each.  We spent the waiting hours in the airport lounge- which I have to say was very nice.  Chicken curries, byrami rice, noddles and all sorts of breads and dips, green salads, oriental salads, Greek salads and decadent desserts to finish off.  I flew with a very satisfied tummy.
We arrived in Rome in the early morning, hopped aboard a local train from the airport and hit the Vatican.  Didn't know it was its own country.

Me outside the old entrance.  It is now the exit.  The Vatican, St. Peters Square, Sistine chapel and St. Peters Basilica are all inside the Vatican in the heart of Rome.  We waited in line for about 1/2 hour then bagged waiting and met up with a tour guide.  Totally worth the extra cash, at least it gave some understanding to what we were looking at.

In the Acorn Courtyard - main piazza.  Me with our very informative guide.  She is a fellow Canadian!!!

Main entrance in the Vatican Museum - a hall full of Busts.  Overwhelming but very cool!

A view of Rome from a window in the Vatican.

Courtyard with mega tourists and Roman Statues.  Did you know the Vatican has approx 60,000 visitors a day?

Roman statues carved from marble. So mind blowing that someone can create a very detailed, lifelike replica of human and gods.

I loved how real this foot looked.

A huge marble bath for parties - all female of course.

                                                            Statue of Artemis Ephesia

Room dedicated to Mary

                                              Very ornate ceilings- art everywhere!

Just a glimpse of some of the Vatican Museum - a museum that sprawls over 7 km of amazing art masterpieces. This part took us a bit over an hour and a half - just inside.  Be prepared to spend a good part of the day here. The Sistine Chapel and St. Peters Basilica are more of this day's highlights.  Did I say overwhelming?  I will post more on this amazing day- I just need to get some posts out of the way...Rome, so far!

Art Week for Grace

What a day for the 3rd graders!  What a day to WOW their parents with all their artistic talent!
Last week the 3rd graders had most of their art projects on display - and then parents were invited to an assembly where the kids explained what they had learned and created.

This is an example of Kinetic Art - art that moves, by Grace and Eva. It was displayed upstairs in the PYP building.

Grace's example of Impressions. She reproduced her own reflection from a mirror.  She choose to express unhappiness.  She concentrated on the frown and making her eyes look sad.  Great job Grace!

This is an example of one point perspective- You have a vanishing point, everything goes towards this point and disappears.  Grace drew this step by step.

The kids also played recorder - they've learned about 20 songs this year.

The students had to make a persuasive advertisement.  The theme was chocolate bars.
                                                                    Good work Grace and Amaya!

Grace was chosen to present her one point perspective piece to the audience.  Way to go Grace!

Fellow students explaining their art work.

No assembly is complete in the Middle East without an Arabic presentation.
The kids learned an Arabic song about the cycle of water.

Very fun and very talented kids at Raha School. I think the art programme is unparalleled - the resources and teachers are super fantastic!  Awesome job Grade 3's!
